NUJ calls for protection for journalists during 2023 elections

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on Friday told the government, parties and politicians to ensure journalists are protected during the 2023 elections.

NUJ President, Chris Isiguzo made the call in Gombe at a capacity-building workshop for pressmen in the Northeast. Isiguzo lamented how journalists lost their lives, sustained injuries or had their equipment damaged while covering elections and yet little done to ensure accountability for attacks on the media over the years.

Isiguzo, represented by his deputy Alhassan Yahya, asked stakeholders to forestall attacks before and during the polls.

“It is important that the issue of safety and security be given the needed attention by the government and other stakeholders.

“The safety of journalists is essential in the pursuit of the civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights of all citizens,” he stressed.

The NUJ, however, charged Nigerians to actively participate in the 2023 general elections.
