March 11 polls: Group tasks INEC, DSS, Police on credible elections

A group operating under the aegis of Southern and Middle Belt Alliance, SaMBA has tasked the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to conduct free, fair and credible elections on Saturday to save Nigeria’s democracy.

The group urged the chairman of the commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to tender his resignation from office if the governorship and House of Assembly elections would not be credible due to lack of capacity, stressing that Nigerians will not receive anything short of that.

A statement by the spokesperson of the group, Prince Rwang Pam Jr., made available to journalists on Tuesday, urged security agents to synergise and ensure free and credible elections.

The statement urged the Director General of the Department of State Security, DSS, and the Inspector General of Police to rise up to the occasion of ensuring an acceptable election or bow out of service.

The failure of security agents to carry out their duties, SaMBA argued, contributed to the dismal performance of INEC and its woeful outing on February 25 as they failed to protect the mandate of 25 million Nigerians.

The statement said: “Nigerians need a commitment that transcends verbal promises. The countless instances of bullying, intimidation of voters and snatching and destruction of electoral materials in various polling units across the country in the presence of security agencies indicates gross incompetence on the part of the Nigeria Police whose primary responsibility is to protect lives and property.”
