LSM Abuja Metro reiterates commitment to protect rights of women

*Sensitizes women on how to navigate economic hardship 

*Archbishop Kaigama urges LSM to bring up godly children 

The Ladies of St. Mulumba Nigeria has said it will continue to promote the protection of the rights of women in Nigeria. 

Lady Agnes Ozaohu Eneji, Worthy President Abuja Metropolitan Council of the Ladies of St. Mulumba Nigeria stated this in Abuja while briefing journalists on Friday during Abuja Metro celebration of the Ladies of St. Mulumba Day 2024.

She said the Organisation will also continue sensitize the women on how they can ensure that their rights are not abused.

The Abuja Metro President expressed concern over the economic situation in the country, especially the rate of inflation, resulting in high cost of food items and other essential materials.

Our correspondent reports that the Ladies of St. Mulumba Nigeria is a Catholic Church organization of the wives and widows of the Knights of the Order of St. Mulumba. It was inaugurated on June 24, 1978 in Calabar now Cross River State.   

She said high cost of living, as well as insecurity have affected the quality of life of the populace, urging government to take urgent actions that will ameliorate the situation.

She said in line with the theme of the 2024 Ladies of St. Mulumba Day, Strengthening our resilience amidst Emerging Challenges in Nigeria,” the organisation hopes to sensitize women on the best possible ways of navigating through the current economic quagmire.

Lady Eneji also admonished women in Nigeria to continue to support their husbands during this economic difficulties by ensuring that families are not disintegrated on this account.

According to her, the organisation will also sensitize women on peculiar women diseases and how women can prevent and respond to them.

On the security challenges in the country, the LSM said it is concerned about the level of insecurity in the country where human trafficking, domestic violence, kidnapping, one chance robbery, killings, maiming and their likes becoming a norm, saying young girls and women are mostly casualties.

She said, “The organization is therefore calling on the government and relevant authorities to take these ugly trend and situation as a matter of urgency to nip it at the bud before it delves into a stage whereby it cannot be managed nor controlled. Life is sacred and most be honoured and preserved, this is what the sacred order of Knights and Ladies of St. Mulumba believe in”

The Abuja Metro President said the LSM will continue to promote the protection of the rights of women in Nigeria and also sensitize the women on how they can ensure that their rights are not abused.

As part of the 2024 celebration, the organisation also visited the FCT school for the blind, where it made donation of several items, including learning materials and cash donation.

Meanwhile, the Catholic Archdiocese Of Abuja, Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama has urged the LSM to continue to propagate the gospel of Jesus Christ and to also assist the less privileged in the society in line with their mission.

He stated this when the leadership of the LSM Abuja Metro paid a courtesy visit on him.

He called for strong collaboration between the LSM and other organisations in the church to promote the gospel

He lauded the efforts of the Ladies in defending the church, saying “You have done the church proud. You are not ashamed of the gospel of Jesus.”

He called on the Ladies to do their best to bring up their children in a godly way, saying that this will reflect in the church in general.
