Court remands man, 25, over suspected burglary

A Chief Magistrate Court sitting at Mapo in Ibadan on Wednesday remanded a 25 year-old-man, Yusuf Bello, in Agodi correctional facility over alleged theft of school furniture worth N1.15 million.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Presiding Magistrate, Mrs O.O. Latunji ordered that Bello be remanded after he pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge of unlawful house break, theft and malicious damage to property.

Latunji also admitted the defendant to a N250,000 bail with two sureties in like sum.

However, Bello failed to meet the bail conditions and was consequently remanded.

The magistrate adjourned the case until May 18 for the trial.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Oluseye Akinola told the court that the defendant committed the offence on May 13, at Orita-Aperin Area of Ibadan, Oyo State.

Akinola added that Bello broke into the Christ Church High School 1, Orita-Aperin and stole 75 pieces of iron chairs and lockers worth N500,000.

‘’He also stole iron doors worth N80,000, burglary windows worth N300,000 as well as damaged the school’s PVC roof.

“The offences contravene sections 412, 390 (9) and 41 of the Criminal Code Cap 38 vol. iv Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria, 2000,’’ he said.
