The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi on Wednesday resigned his position.
Modi submitted his resignation to India’s President Droupadi Murmu after his cabinet recommended the dissolution of the lower house of parliament Lok Sabha.
Accepting his resignation, President Murmu requested that Modi continue in office until the new government is formed.
According to an official of the President’s House, Modi’s resignation was a part of the protocol followed before the formation of the next government in the country.
The Election Commission of India released the official data on its website early Wednesday, suggesting that the ruling National Democratic Alliance, led by Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, is to form the next government.
This is coming when Modi had declared an election victory following his coalition winning more than half of parliamentary seats, with votes still being counted.
This comes after a six-week-long election, where nearly 1 billion people were eligible to vote.
Addressing his followers at the headquarters of his Bharatiya Janata Party, BJP, in New Delhi, Modi said the National Democratic Alliance “is going to form the government for the third time, we are grateful to the people, this is a victory for the world’s largest democracy.”
