Family of ex-Zamfara CPG boss laments his continued detention, threatens to sue police

The family of the former Commandant of Zamfara State Community Protection Guards (CGP), Col. Rabiu Yandoto (rtd), has lamented the continued detention of their father by the state police command.

They have expressed concern that their father has been detained in police custody without being arraigned in a court of competent jurisdiction.

The family, through their lawyer, Barrister Jamilu Shafa, claimed that Col Yandoto has been in police custody for about five weeks without being charged or given reasons for his arrest since July 3, 2024.

Barrister Shafa, who was at the Chief Magistrates Court in Gusau with his client’s children, said the police were supposed to arraign the retired Colonel in court on Thursday but failed to do so.

He argued that the continued detention of his client in police custody violates his fundamental human rights and stated that he is initiating action against the police for failing to arraign Col. Yandoto in court and provide reasons for his arrest.

Barrister Shafa also noted that the arrest and detention of his client have put the family in a difficult position due to the absence of their breadwinner.

The Commissioner of Police in Zamfara State, CP Muhammad Dalijan, denied that the arrest and detention of the former Commandant of the Zamfara Community Protection Guards (CPGs), Col. Rabiu Yandoto, was politically motivated.

Dalijan stressed that Yandoto was arrested in connection with the gruesome murder of Lawali Magaji, a political ally of Senator Kabiru Marafa.
