Fire guts furniture shop, two churches in Ibadan

A raging fire on Tuesday razed two churches and a furniture shop in the Felele area of Ibadan, Oyo State, destroying property estimated to be worth millions of naira.

No life was lost in the incident, according to locals, who commended the swift intervention of firefighters, which they said prevented the inferno from spreading further.

The General Manager of Fire Services in Oyo State, Yemi Akinyinka, confirmed the incident, noting that the fire was reported at No. 51, Debo Plaza, opposite Lam Adesina Junction, Felele, Ibadan.

According to him, two churches, the Redeemed Christian Church of God and a New Covenant parish, along with a furniture shop, were affected.

“Firefighters quickly responded and prevented the fire from spreading to nearby buildings,” Akinyinka said.

He further stated that the fire primarily consumed plastic chairs and PVC materials used for ceiling decorations, which were destroyed.

A resident, Mrs Dauda Ireoluwa, said the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.

“We all rushed out after receiving distress calls,” she said.
