U.S.-based Fuji artist Olawale Lawal, popularly known as Wale Currency, has unveiled a powerful new track titled Bragging Rights, a song born out of a deeply personal journey and a testament to his resilience in the face of adversity.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the track, Wale Currency revealed, “The song Bragging Rights originated from the frustration that has been building inside of me from 2023.”
He explained that the year the track was recorded marked a turning point in his career, as it became a canvas for expressing his internal battles and triumphs.
Rendered predominantly in Yoruba, Bragging Rights is a rich fusion of percussion, keyboard, lead guitar, talking drums, and omele, tied together by unforgettable melodies and carefully layered harmonies.
The result is a vibrant sonic experience that blends traditional Fuji roots with modern flair.
Wale Currency describes the track as “a self-declaration of my work ethic and ruggedness.” It is, in his words, a reflection of the “drive and relentless pursuit in Fuji music” that has defined his artistry. With flamboyant tones and bold lyrics, the song boldly highlights the artist’s journey through betrayal and pain.
“The challenges include silent enemies (friends in disguise), backbiters, and the domestic abuse I faced till date,” he candidly shared, adding a layer of emotional gravity to the track’s lyrical narrative.
Interestingly, Bragging Rights was initially planned as a collaboration with fellow musician Yeye DTN.
However, Wale Currency said he was later encouraged by Yeye DTN to go solo, in order to “solidify my own artistry without the assistance of another musician.”
The track also features energetic alujos and includes a special shoutout to singer Asake, whom Wale Currency credits for “his Fuji-inspired contributions in pop music.”
With Bragging Rights, Wale Currency not only reinforces his position in the Fuji music scene but also offers listeners an emotional and rhythmic journey through the highs and lows of his personal and professional life.
