“KANO STATE SHOCKER: Gov Yusuf Abandons Ship, Resigns from NNPP Amidst Party Turmoil

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has officially resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing deepening internal crises and persistent leadership disputes within the party. In a statement, Governor Yusuf expressed gratitude to the party for the platform and support extended to him since 2022, but noted that the internal disagreements had weakened cohesion and created uncertainty among members.

The resignation, effective January 23, 2026, is accompanied by the exit of 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 local government chairmen. Governor Yusuf emphasized that his decision was taken in good faith, without bitterness, and with a commitment to peace, unity, and the progress of Kano State.

The NNPP Secretary of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Hon. Kabiru Zubairu, acknowledged the resignation and commended Governor Yusuf’s performance, citing achievements in infrastructure development, urban renewal, health, education, and economic empowerment.

Aluta News reports that the move has sent shockwaves across the state, with many wondering about the implications for the NNPP and Governor Yusuf’s next steps.
