Tinubu Begins Historic Two-Day State Visit To UK Tuesday

Tinubu will meet Starmer and witness a £746 million port financing agreement during historic UK state visit.

President Bola Tinubu will depart Abuja on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, for a two-day state visit to the United Kingdom at the invitation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

According to a statement issued on Monday by the presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, the British monarch will host Tinubu and the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, at Windsor Castle from March 18 to March 19.

The visit marks the first by a Nigerian leader in 37 years and makes Tinubu the first Nigerian president to be hosted by the British monarch at Windsor Castle.

The trip is aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, with discussions expected to focus on immigration, trade, investment and cultural cooperation.

While at Windsor Castle, the King will host the Nigerian president and his wife to a special exhibition of items from the Royal Collection relating to Nigeria.

The two leaders are also expected to hold private discussions and meet organisations involved in interfaith dialogue.

The British royal family will later host a State Banquet in honour of the Nigerian delegation.

During the visit, Tinubu will hold a bilateral meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street, which will culminate in the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding and bilateral agreements.

The agreements will cover areas such as trade, investment, defence cooperation and cultural exchange.

Tinubu will also witness the signing of a £746 million financing agreement between UK Export Finance (UKEF), the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and the Federal Ministry of Finance.

The financing deal will support the refurbishment of two major Nigerian port facilities — the Lagos Port Complex (Apapa Quays) and the Tin Can Island Port Complex.

As part of the visit, the president will attend the Nigerian Modernism exhibition, showcasing Nigerian art and culture, and participate in a reception with Nigerian and British business leaders as well as members of the diaspora community.

Members of the president’s entourage include Senate President Godswill Akpabio, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, and several cabinet ministers.

Others on the delegation are Attorney-General and Minister of Justice Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Wale Edun, Minister of Solid Minerals Dele Alake, Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Bianca Ojukwu, and Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment Jumoke Oduwole.

Also accompanying the president are Minister of Culture and Creative Economy Hannatu Musawa, Minister of Communications and Digital Economy Bosun Tijani, Minister of Defence Christopher Musa, and Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency Mohammed Mohammed.

The president is expected to return to Nigeria at the conclusion of the state visit.
