The 4 Brigade Chapter of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA) has commemorated the 2026 International Women’s Day with activities focused on health awareness, physical fitness, and women’s empowerment in Edo State.
The event, held on March 17 at the NAOWA Skills Acquisition Centre in Ekehuan Military Cantonment, Benin City, drew a large number of participants, mainly women from military barracks, highlighting a shared commitment to personal wellbeing and community development.
Speaking at the event, the Zonal Coordinator of NAOWA 4 Brigade Chapter, Mrs. Mariam Aina Balogun, welcomed attendees and emphasised the importance of the annual celebration. She noted that the 2026 theme,
“Give to Gain: For All Women and Girls – Rights, Equality and Empowerment,” underscores the role of women in fostering societal growth and stability.
She urged women to continue promoting unity, resilience, and self-development.
In his goodwill message, the Commander of 4 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Ahmed Balogun, commended NAOWA members for their support to their families and contributions to nation-building. He described them as vital to the strength of the military community and called for sustained efforts toward women’s empowerment.
Also speaking, the Special Guest of Honour, Mrs. Eyitoyosi Shonibare, reaffirmed NAOWA’s commitment to improving the welfare of military families and advancing community development. She encouraged women to prioritise their physical and mental health while pursuing personal and collective growth.
Activities at the event included a road walk, group fitness exercises, and a Zumba session aimed at promoting healthy living. The programme also featured drama performances by NAOWA students and members of the Nigerian Army Soldiers’ Wives Association (NASWA), as well as cultural dance displays.
A key highlight was a medical awareness session, where participants received guidance on first aid, fire prevention, and emergency response.
The event formed part of efforts by NAOWA to promote the wellbeing and empowerment of women within military communities.
