Nigerians Decide 2023: Arrest, prosecute peddlers of fake news – Imo PDP to security agencies

Less than two days to the general elections, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Imo State has called on security agencies to tame the menace of fake news by rising to the occasion to arrest and prosecute those whose stock in trade is such destructive venture.

PDP made the call in a statement signed by its state Publicity Secretary, Collins Opurozor, made available to newsmen in Owerri, Imo State capital.

The opposition party, while warning supporters to beware of deceptive information, affirmed that Dr. Albert Agulanna remains the candidate of the party for Aboh Mbaise/Ngor Okpala Federal Constituency.

It dismissed reports of his removal by INEC, describing such fake news as the height of desperation by his enemies.

The statement reads, “It becomes deeply worrisome that certain elements would go to town with fake news as part of their attempts to deny the people of Aboh Mbaise/Ngor Okpala Federal Constituency the quality representation which Dr. Agulanna stands to deliver.

“For the avoidance of doubt, there was never a time the name of Dr. Agulanna was removed by INEC. In short, the final list of qualified candidates as published by INEC contains the name of Dr. Agulanna as our House of Representatives candidate for Aboh Mbaise/Ngor Okpala Federal Constituency.

“Following from that, our Party calls on security agencies to tame the menace of fake news by rising to the occasion to arrest and prosecute those whose stock in trade is such destructive venture.”
