Residents groan as four days blackout hits Umuahia suburb

Residents of Amuzukwu and some adjourning streets in Umuahia, Abia State capital, have lamented four days of darkness following power outage from the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC.

The power outage, which started on Sunday evening, was yet to be restored, even as of Thursday morning when this report was filed.

No official statement has been issued by the EEDC in Umuahia about the outage, but some of the officials of the company who did not want their names in print, said it was as a result of ‘system failure’.

The situation has caused untold hardship on Umuahia residents living in Amuzukwu, which is a densely populated area of the town, as water supply is now a major challenge.

Most public water boreholes, which rely on public electricity, are now without water, making a few of them that opened for business, to sell water at exorbitant amounts.

The situation is made worse by the high cost of petroleum products, as many businesses operating in the area have been disrupted.
