Deadly explosion at firecracker factory kills workers as authorities investigate cause, safety breaches, and illegal operations during closure hours.
At least 25 people have been killed following a devastating explosion at a firecracker factory in southern India, an incident that has once again raised serious concerns over safety compliance within the country’s fireworks industry.
The explosion occurred on Sunday evening at the Vanaja Fireworks Industry, located in Virudhunagar, a region widely known for its concentration of fireworks manufacturing facilities. Officials confirmed that the factory was not meant to be operational at the time of the blast, yet approximately 50 workers were reportedly inside the premises when the explosion occurred.
According to district authorities, the initial blast caused widespread destruction, damaging at least three rooms within the facility and reducing significant portions of the structure to rubble. Eyewitness accounts from survivors indicated that around 25 workers had been gathered in the veranda area in front of the factory when the fire broke out, rapidly escalating into a deadly explosion.
Rescue efforts began immediately but were severely hindered by continuing detonations from firecrackers stored within the building. Emergency responders struggled to access parts of the site as intermittent explosions created dangerous conditions, slowing down recovery operations and complicating efforts to reach trapped victims.
While rescue teams were still working at the scene, a second explosion occurred, injuring at least 13 additional individuals. Authorities confirmed that although those injured in the secondary blast did not suffer severe burns, the incident further underscored the volatile conditions within the factory following the initial explosion.
District Collector NO Sukhaputra confirmed that rescue operations have now been concluded, with recovery teams shifting focus toward victim identification and investigation. As of Monday, officials said that 22 of the 25 victims had been identified, noting that the majority of those killed were women. Several bodies were reportedly charred beyond recognition due to the intensity of the explosion.
The exact cause of the blast remains unknown, and a formal investigation is currently underway. Authorities have, however, already identified potential regulatory breaches. Speaking to reporters, Sukhaputra stated that the factory’s operation on a Sunday constituted a “first violation,” emphasising that the facility should have been closed at the time of the incident. Although the factory reportedly held a valid operational licence, officials confirmed that further checks were ongoing to determine whether additional safety or compliance violations occurred.
Law enforcement authorities disclosed that a formal complaint has been filed against both the factory owner and the foreman, who are currently absconding. Police confirmed that four special teams have been deployed to track and apprehend the individuals as part of the ongoing investigation.
The incident has once again highlighted recurring safety challenges within India’s fireworks manufacturing sector. Factories in regions like Tamil Nadu play a central role in supplying firecrackers for weddings, festivals, and other ceremonial events, but the industry has faced repeated scrutiny over adherence to safety regulations and operational standards.
The tragedy has also drawn swift reactions from political leaders. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the incident as “deeply distressing” and extended condolences to the families of the victims. Similarly, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin expressed “immense sorrow” over the loss of lives and confirmed that he had directed officials to provide all necessary assistance to those affected.
