The Michael Jackson biopic Michael has become the highest-grossing musical biopic of all time, surpassing the long-standing record held by Bohemian Rhapsody.
According to industry reports, the Lionsgate-produced film has generated $911.9 million at the global box office, overtaking the $903.6 million worldwide haul recorded by Bohemian Rhapsody, the 2018 film chronicling the life of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury.
The milestone marks another major achievement for the film, which has enjoyed a strong theatrical run since its release in April. Despite becoming available on digital platforms, Michael has continued to attract cinema audiences worldwide. Its latest boost came with its June 12 debut in Japan, opening the film to a significant new market.
The film had already set a record earlier in its release by delivering the biggest domestic opening weekend ever for a musical biopic. It earned $97.2 million in North America and $121.6 million internationally during its opening weekend, generating a combined global debut of $218.8 million.
That performance eclipsed the previous domestic opening record set by Straight Outta Compton, which opened to $60.2 million in 2015.
The biographical drama explores the life and legacy of Michael Jackson, charting his rise from a child performer with The Jackson 5 to becoming one of the most influential entertainers in music history. Beyond his celebrated performances, the film also examines his personal life and the challenges he faced throughout his career.
The movie stars Jaafar Jackson in the lead role, alongside Nia Long, Juliano Valdi, KeiLyn Durrel Jones, Laura Harrier, Miles Teller and Colman Domingo.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan, the film was produced by Graham King, John Branca and John McClain.
The film became available on Premium Digital and Premium Video on Demand platforms on June 9, with rentals and purchases offered through major streaming services. A physical release on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD is scheduled for July 14.
Following its record-breaking box office success, producers are already developing a sequel that will continue exploring Jackson’s life and career.
