Oyo police dismiss claims Sunday Igboho rescued abducted residents, urging public to avoid spreading misinformation.
The Oyo State Police Command has dismissed reports claiming that Yoruba nation agitator Sunday Adeyemo rescued two residents abducted in Igbope, describing the claim as false and misleading.
The police reaction followed widespread reports and videos circulating on social media Saturday night alleging that the abductees, identified as Kuburat Omowumi and her son, had regained their freedom through the intervention of Sunday Igboho.
The reports emerged shortly after the expiration of a two-hour ultimatum reportedly issued by Igboho to Fulani leaders in the community, demanding the release of the victims who were abducted by suspected bandits on June 16.
However, in a statement issued on Sunday, the spokesperson of the Oyo State Police Command, Ayanlade Olayinka, categorically rejected the claim.
“The Command wishes to state unequivocally that the claim contained in the circulated video is false, unfounded, and misleading,” Olayinka said.
He stated that the police had intensified intelligence-led and operational efforts aimed at securing the safe rescue of the victims and apprehending those responsible for the abduction.
According to him, the command is working closely with other security agencies and relevant stakeholders to ensure the success of ongoing rescue operations.
Olayinka warned that the circulation of unverified information during a sensitive security operation could create false narratives, generate confusion and potentially undermine efforts to secure the victims’ release.
He appealed to members of the public with credible information relating to the incident to cooperate with security agencies by providing useful intelligence that could aid ongoing investigations and rescue efforts.
The police spokesperson also urged residents to rely only on official communication channels for updates on the case and to verify information before sharing it on social media.
