Nigeria has emerged as the world’s second-largest user of Artificial Intelligence (AI), according to the Chinese Consul General in Lagos, Ms. Yan Yuqing, who also announced that China will provide 5,000 AI training opportunities for Nigeria and other developing countries over the next five years.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Ms. Yuqing said Nigeria’s rapid adoption of AI reflects the country’s expanding digital economy and deepening technological cooperation with China.
She explained that the training programme is designed to strengthen technical skills, promote knowledge sharing, and enable developing countries to maximise the opportunities created by the rapidly evolving AI industry.
According to her, India currently leads the world in AI usage frequency, with Nigeria ranking second globally, driven by growing investments in digital infrastructure and technology.
She added that Nigeria is among Africa’s leading AI adopters alongside South Africa, Kenya and Egypt, highlighting the country’s increasing role in the continent’s digital transformation.
The Chinese envoy reaffirmed China’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Nigeria through training, innovation and technology exchange, stressing that artificial intelligence should serve as a tool for global development rather than deepen the digital divide.
She made the remarks while reflecting on the outcome of the 2026 World AI Conference held in Shanghai, where world leaders and technology experts called for stronger international collaboration in AI development and governance.
According to Ms. Yuqing, Chinese President Xi Jinping urged countries to embrace openness, innovation and responsible AI development to ensure that artificial intelligence delivers broad economic and social benefits.
She noted that while AI presents significant opportunities for economic growth, productivity and technological advancement, governments must also address key challenges, including data security, ethical standards and effective regulation.
“The discussion at the Shanghai conference also focused on ensuring that AI remains safe, inclusive and beneficial to all. Countries must work together to establish global rules that will guide the responsible use of artificial intelligence,” she said.
Ms. Yuqing further disclosed that China is expanding international AI cooperation through several global initiatives designed to improve access to technology, particularly for developing nations.
She said China intends to strengthen collaboration with regional organisations, including the African Union and BRICS, to promote AI innovation, capacity building and digital inclusion.
According to her, the partnerships will enhance knowledge sharing, support skills development and create greater opportunities for young people across developing countries.
Reaffirming Beijing’s commitment to Nigeria, the Consul General said China remains committed to working closely with Nigeria and other international partners to advance responsible AI development, strengthen digital cooperation and ensure that emerging technologies contribute to inclusive and sustainable development.
