Germany’s military is testing 30 artificial intelligence systems as it prepares to introduce AI technology for battlefield operations.
Vice Admiral Thomas Daum, head of Germany’s Cyber and Information Domain Service, said the military is currently evaluating the systems. A prototype is expected in the second quarter of 2027, while broader implementation is planned for 2028.
The move comes as modern warfare generates increasingly large amounts of data. The war in Ukraine has highlighted the growing use of drones, satellites and other technologies capable of collecting and transmitting vast amounts of information from the battlefield.
AI could help military personnel process this information more quickly and support decision-making during military operations.
Most of the AI systems being tested were developed by German companies. French technology company ChapsVision is also among the foreign firms competing for a role in the programme.
Germany has so far shown limited interest in Palantir’s Maven Smart System, an AI platform designed to analyse military information. Daum said in April that the German military was not currently planning to acquire the system.
Palantir’s Maven platform is already used by the United States, NATO commands and several allied countries to analyse battlefield information, including photographs and video.
The system is designed to help military personnel process large amounts of information and improve situational awareness.
However, concerns about dependence on US technology and the handling of sensitive military data have contributed to resistance to Palantir’s systems in parts of Europe.
