INEC examines suspected AI-generated photographs in its preliminary voter register after public concerns, with final certification scheduled for December 15.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it is investigating suspicious photographs in its preliminary register of voters following reports that some images may have been generated using artificial intelligence.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the commission said it was reviewing questionable registration records identified during an earlier display exercise and examining possible technical or procedural lapses linked to the photographs.
INEC explained that the register uploaded to its website on October 26 was the same preliminary list displayed at Registration Areas nationwide between October 9 and 15 during the Display, Claims and Objections exercise.
It said some records were flagged for further examination during the physical display, prompting a review and corrective action in line with established procedures.
The commission clarified that the online register did not reflect all ongoing data-cleanup activities, stressing that the published list was not the final certified register.
“The Display, Claims and Objections exercise is specifically intended to facilitate public scrutiny, identify inaccuracies and irregularities, and enable appropriate corrections before certification,” the commission said.
INEC added that it was examining the circumstances surrounding the suspicious photographs and would take appropriate action based on verified findings.
The commission welcomed citizens and stakeholders who raised concerns about the images, saying their scrutiny would help improve the accuracy and integrity of the voter register.
It said verification, adjudication and data-cleanup processes would continue ahead of the scheduled certification of the final Register of Voters on December 15, 2026.
INEC assured Nigerians that verified irregularities would be addressed through established procedures and that further updates would be provided as the review progresses.
