UK Court Convicts Russell Brand Of Rape, Three Sexual Assaults

Russell Brand is found guilty of rape and three sexual assaults linked to incidents between 1999 and 2009.

British comedian and actor Russell Brand has been found guilty of rape and three sexual assaults by a London court, with a judge warning that he faces a lengthy prison sentence.

Brand, 51, was convicted at Southwark Crown Courton Thursday. He was acquitted of two other rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault.

Judge Joel Bennathan said Brand would be sentenced on Monday. The comedian was taken to the court cells ahead of a bail application scheduled for 1500 GMT.

Brand had denied all the allegations, arguing that the encounters were consensual or that the accounts had been reinvented or re-imagined.

Prosecutors had described him as a sexual predator whose offences took place between 1999 and 2009, as he rose from performing stand-up comedy in small venues to becoming a television presenter and Hollywood actor.

The trial heard evidence from six women, who are entitled to lifelong anonymity. The complainants did not know one another but reported their experiences to the police after a television documentary andpress reports in 2023 brought other allegations against Brand into the public domain.

The most serious allegation involved an incident in 2009, when Brand raped a woman at his home, according to evidence presented in court.

The woman told the court she had first met Brand after attending one of his comedy performances, where they had a sexual encounter in his dressing room.

Days later, she visited his home. She said that although they initially had consensual sex, Brand subsequently raped her anally.

She also told the court that Brand instructed her to clean up the blood and mess afterwards.

Brand was also convicted of sexually assaulting a woman at a London bar in 2004. The woman told the court he approached her at a party and grabbed her breasts.

Another conviction related to an incident in 2009, when Brand demanded a massage from a woman working with him on a project promotion before putting his head between her legs. Two of his colleagues were present.

A fourth woman, who worked at a radio station, told the court Brand attacked her in 2004 or 2005 in front of members of his entourage.

Brand, who was previously married to American singer Katy Perry, became widely known through his comedy, broadcasting career and film roles, including Get Him to the Greek and Arthur.
