Demolition: Kofar-Mata prayer ground’ll be ready soon – official

The Kano State Urban Planning and Development Authority(KNUPDA), has promised that the Kofar-Mata prayer ground would be ready before the Eid-el-Kabir festival.

Structures built on the ancient prayer ground were among those brought down by the state government in a mass demolition exercise.

The state had premised its action on the need to return the ground to the Muslim community for festival prayers.

KNUPDA managing director Ibrahim Yakubu told newsmen at the site of the demolition exercise on Thursday that “the legendary Kofar-Mata prayer ground will be cleared of the debris and be put to use”.

“”Equipment being used for demolition of illegal structures in other parts of the state capital will be mobilised to the  ground to fast track the clearing exercise.

“The 500-year-old prayer ground will have all the debris in it cleared before the Eid-el-Kabir festival.”

He also disclosed that more than 100 scavengers had been arrested by the Police for removing building materials like rods, doors and windows from the demolished structures.

He urged parents and guardians to prevail on their children and wards to desist from picking items from the demolished buildings.

Yakubu said that the demolition exercise would continue as planned, pointing out that government had the responsibility to rid the state of illegal structures so as to restore sanity.
