I called the attention of my chef to the destruction of the dog’s cage by one of the dogs in the house .
I simply told him “Patra is destroying its cage” and he simply replied “Fr you know any time that dog goes out and sees other dogs moving in the street freely, it is always happy and wants to be like them. That dog never like cage”
I replied him thus: “You know it is a local specie, what do you expect from a local person, no matter how you try for such person to refine him, it’s never enough, he will still act true to its type”
I further told him a proverb in Yoruba series of proverbs . Ida ni yoo pera re leru( It is Ida that will call himself a slave)
Let me tell you a short story:
In those days, there was a big man who owned a slave called Ida. His master made him to be treated like a freeborn. He got all the opportunities of a freeborn, nice clothes, foot wears and being taking out for parties.
One day, his rich master took him along for a dinner with rich people and important persons. Ida was made to sit with them on the banquet table. After the dinner, it was time to go home,they could not find Ida, they checked everywhere, no luck until they went to check a place where they should not find an invited guest to a banquet. Do you know the place? At the backyard, where they cooked the food. What was he doing there?
You will be surprised what Ida was doing there. Ida was busy taking care of himself with boiled peeled yam that was meant for goats and ram, eating it. His owner was embarrassed and shocked. He said ” Haa Ida niyoo perare leru (It is you Ida that will call yourself a slave. Despite all that we did to make you have regard, better treatment and care, you still went to where we picked you)
Sir Shina Peter, the great afro juju fame sang ” Omo ile niwon boo gbe won sori bed won a jabo”(They are people of the ground, where they do sleep, if you put them on the bed, they will fall down)
Some persons, no matter how you make efforts to lift them up, make them to live posh life, they will still go back to where they are picked.
You take them out, they will disgrace you, they will act true to their types.
They must show red flag, you will notice they are from the village even when you have done everything to polish them and clean them up, when you have done everything to remove their background from them that needed polishing and packaging.
