REA provides energy to 7.5 million Nigerians in three years

The Rural Electrification Agency (REA), says it has provided power to 7.5 million Nigerians to enhance energy security from 2020 to date.

The Agency said it also initiated viable reform programmes to demystify its operations and promote probity in project execution for effective service delivery.

This is contained in a statement by Muntari Ibrahim, Acting Director, Department of Promotion, Information and Outreach, on Tuesday in Yola.

He said the projects were designed to ensure uninterrupted power supply, provide job opportunities and encourage growth of small businesses in the country.

He listed the projects to include introduction of standard operation procedures (Sops) for efficient practices across all existing departments of the agency.

Ibrahim added that the agency had in the recent past been undergoing a series of reforms under the able leadership of its current managing Director, Engineer Ahmad Salihijo Ahmad.

“We have introduced positive reforms in terms of staff discipline and accountability. This feat was achieved in collaboration with the ministry of power and the National Assembly,” he said.

According to him, the agency has secured a US$ 750 million facility from the World Bank for expansion of the rural electrification projects.

“We have also erected no fewer than 1,650 km of street lights across rural communities among many other initiatives that have direct impact on the lives of Nigerians.”

He, however, refuted the series of allegations being peddled in some section of the media concerning activities of the agency, saying “we would continue to perform optimally.”
