Lagos building collapse: Death toll rises to five

The death toll of the Thursday building collapse in Lagos State has risen to five while five others were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Earlier reported that a building collapsed at number 13 Wilson Mba Street, Arowojobe Estate Maryland, Lagos State.

The incident was said to have occurred at about 3:58 am.

Meanwhile, men of the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority, LASEMA, who rushed to the scene for a rescue operation were able to save the lives of the survivors.

It was gathered that the incident happened when a set of three terraces under construction suddenly collapsed in the midnight hours.

LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyitolu, who spoke on the incident, said search and rescue operations were swift, leading to the rescue of some victims.

“Initially, three adult males were recovered dead, two male adults were rescued alive, and one adult male trapped under the rubble was rescued alive by the LASEMA and the Lagos State Fire Service.

“All the six men were site workers. They are receiving pre-hospital care on location while SEHMU has been contacted for the remains of the three fatalities,” Oke-Osanyitolu confirmed.

After the rescue operation, the LASEMA boss confirmed more casualties, saying, “A total number of dead is now five, adult males and a total number of five persons rescued and receiving medical treatment.”

Emergency teams at the scene of the unfortunate incident, include Lagos State Rescue and Fire Service, Nigeria Police, and other rescue teams.

LASEMA’S excavator has been deployed to accelerate the search and rescue operations.
