NUJ Chairman Hails Members for Stellar Press Week Success

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, is basking in the glow of a highly successful 2025 Press Week, with the Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, commending members for their exceptional dedication and participation. The week-long event, themed “Journalism in a Changing World: Press Freedom, Media, Democracy, and Society,” saw a series of impactful activities that underscored the critical role of the media in national development and advocacy for press freedom.

Throughout the week, journalists engaged in a variety of events designed to foster professional unity, highlight key challenges, and chart a course for the future of journalism in Nigeria. Notable activities included a “Walk for Press Freedom” that drew hundreds of members, emphasizing the non-negotiable nature of a free press in a democratic society. There was also a public lecture and awards ceremony where past chairmen and media icons were honored, and crucial discussions held on journalists’ safety, insurance frameworks, and sustainable funding for the media industry.

A significant highlight was the inauguration of Press Clubs in secondary schools across the FCT. This initiative, aimed at mentoring students and igniting their passion for journalism, seeks to shape responsible future leaders and promote media literacy from an early age. The Chairman reiterated the union’s commitment to nurturing young talents and educating them on the evolving landscape of journalism, particularly in an era marked by misinformation and fake news.

Comrade Ike expressed immense gratitude to all members for their unwavering support and active involvement, which contributed to the resounding success of the Press Week.

She emphasized that the turnout and enthusiasm demonstrated a strong collective resolve to uphold journalistic ethics, defend press freedom, and continue to serve as the watchdog of society. The success of the 2025 Press Week, she noted, serves as a powerful testament to the resilience and enduring spirit of Nigerian journalists.
