AFAN official tasks FG on inputs for dry season farming

Mr Godwin Akandu, the Vice Chairman, All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) has urged the Federal government to ensure timely distribution of agro inputs during the dry season farming.

Akandu who made the call in an interview on Thursday in Port Harcourt, said that government’s support was critical to the campaign for food security.

He said that food security and sustainability could only be achieved if rural farmers across the country had access to government supports.

The AFAN official commended the Federal Government for distributing agro inputs at subsidized rates to 2,800 accredited farmers in Rivers during the wet season farming.

“That was a commendable move, it helped the farmers to cultivate. We urge the Federal Government to do more during the dry season,” he said.

Akandu urged the Federal Government to expand the coverage of its support schemes in order to accommodate more farmers in the state.

“With no fewer than two million voting population, only 2,800 farmers benefited from the Federal Government’s support during the wet season. Although a good gesture, there is need for improvement,” he said.
