Amnesty International Nigeria has called on the Department of State Services (DSS) to urgently investigate the alleged extrajudicial killing of two men by one of its operatives in the Federal Capital Territory.
In a statement on Thursday, the rights group said the incident occurred on 19 January 2026 at Karmajiji community, Abuja, and involved a DSS personnel.
According to Amnesty International, the first victim, Musa Adamu, died a few hours after the incident, while the second victim, Mallam Suleiman Salisu, succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday, January 28, at the Federal Medical Centre, Abuja.
The organisation described the incident as “horrifying” and demanded a thorough investigation, insisting that the suspect must be brought to justice through a fair and transparent trial.
“This gross violation of human rights must not be swept under the carpet,” Amnesty International said.
The group warned that the reckless and unlawful use of firearms by security personnel was contributing to a growing climate of fear, corruption, and public distrust.
“While security agencies are meant to protect lives, some operatives are increasingly unleashing terror on society. Such actions undermine public trust and leave people vulnerable to wanton atrocities,” the statement added.
Amnesty International also expressed concern over what it described as a pattern of security operatives exceeding their lawful mandate by intervening in civil disputes and non-criminal matters, sometimes resorting to torture.
The organisation recalled a similar incident on 7 September 2023, when a DSS operative allegedly shot and killed a fashion designer at Garki International Market, Abuja, during an altercation linked to a dispute involving the operative’s girlfriend and her tailor.
Amnesty urged Nigerian authorities to rein in security operatives, ensure accountability for abuses, and uphold the rule of law.
