Casemiro and Sesko goals give Manchester United edge over Brentford, leaving Champions League qualification within touching distance.
Manchester United moved within two points of securing a return to the Champions League after a 2-1 victory over Brentford, powered by first-half goals from Casemiro and Benjamin Sesko.
Casemiro opened the scoring in the 11th minute, nodding in from a tight angle after Harry Maguire directed a header across goal. United doubled their lead just before halftime when Bruno Fernandes provided his 19th assist of the season for Sesko to finish.
The result means United could confirm qualification as early as Sunday’s clash with Liverpool at Old Trafford if rivals Brighton and Bournemouth fail to win their weekend fixtures.
Brentford’s hopes of reaching Europe suffered a setback as their winless run stretched to seven matches in all competitions. The visitors created several chances, with Dango Ouattara striking the post from close range.
Mathias Jensen pulled one back late on with a powerful strike, but Brentford could not find an equaliser as Mikkel Damsgaard’s stoppage-time header was saved by goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
