The United Kingdom has said it is closely monitoring political developments in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general election, reaffirming its commitment to supporting the country’s democratic institutions and electoral process.

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, gave the assurance during a valedictory visit to the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja, where he reiterated the UK’s interest in Nigeria’s democratic development and sought updates on preparations for forthcoming elections.

According to INEC, Montgomery said. “ his country is closely monitoring developments in Nigeria’s electoral space and remained committed to supporting democratic institutions in the country.”

The envoy, who was accompanied by the UK’s Governance Adviser, Dr. Matthew Ayibakuro, and Political Counsellor, Greta Morris, said the visit was aimed at gaining a better understanding of INEC’s responsibilities and the commission’s level of preparedness for upcoming elections.

INEC said Montgomery explained that “he and his team had sought the meeting to better understand the role of INEC, particularly its preparations for upcoming elections, including the Osun State governorship election and the 2027 general polls.”

The visit comes as political activities continue to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general election, with INEC expected to oversee a series of off-cycle elections before the nationwide polls.
