Gawuna’s allies met Governor Abba Yusuf, fuelling speculation about a possible return to the APC ahead of the 2027 elections.
A group of political associates of Nasiru Gawuna, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) senatorial candidate for Kano Central, has met with Abba Yusuf, governor of Kano State, amid growing speculation of a possible political realignment.
Sunusi Bature, director-general of media and publicity at the Kano State Government House, disclosed the meeting in a statement issued on Tuesday.
According to Bature, the delegation was led by Muhammad Umar, an ally of Gawuna, and included Ali Yako, Kano NDC vice-chairman; Mansur Gawuna; Uba Mijinyawa, also known as Uba Danzainab; Aminu Faruk; Sani Jibrin; Salisu Muhammad; Musa Indabo; Muhammad Bala; Hassan Abdullahi; and Abdurrahman Muhammad.
Bature said Umar explained that the delegation visited Yusuf because of their “passion for the development and progress of Kano State.”
He added that Yako commended the governor for his efforts to transform the state.
“It is clear to everyone that Governor Yusuf is working tirelessly to transform Kano State,” Yako was quoted as saying.
Bature also said the anticipated return of members of Gawuna’s political team to the All Progressives Congress (APC) could strengthen the party’s structure in Kano ahead of the 2027 elections.
The meeting comes against the backdrop of shifting political alliances in Kano as political parties and their supporters position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
Yusuf was elected governor of Kano State in 2023 on the platform of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and was regarded as a political associate of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Yusuf later defected to the APC, while Kwankwaso subsequently joined the NDC, further reshaping the political landscape in Kano.
Gawuna, a former deputy governor of Kano State and the APC’s 2023 governorship candidate, also left the APC for the NDC, where he emerged as the party’s senatorial candidate for Kano Central.
The latest meeting has therefore fuelled speculation that some members of Gawuna’s political camp could return to the APC.
