A petroleum tanker has overturned and caught fire opposite the Odukpani Local Government Secretariat in Cross River State, damaging several shops and vehicles in the area.
The Cross River State Police Command, in a preliminary incident update issued on Sunday, said the tanker was involved in a road traffic accident before overturning and bursting into flames.
The fire subsequently spread to nearby shops and buildings, affecting vehicles in the area.
The tanker driver, who was reportedly trapped in the fire, was rescued and taken to a hospital for medical attention.
Police officers from the Odukpani Division have been deployed to the scene to secure the area and prevent further harm, while the Fire Service has been alerted to contain the blaze.
As of the time of filing, the police said no death had been confirmed, although several shops and vehicles were reportedly affected.
The Command advised members of the public to stay away from the immediate area and allow emergency responders unhindered access to the scene.
