Hoodlums Attack Abia Police Station, Kill Two Officers

Two police officers have been confirmed dead, while three others are receiving medical attention following an attack by unidentified gunmen on Uratta Division Police Station in Aba South Local Government Area of Abia State.

The Abia State Commissioner of Police, CP Wilfred Afolabi, confirmed the casualties while addressing journalists at a hospital in Aba, shortly after Governor Alex Otti’s on-the-spot visit to the police station.

He urged officers to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent a recurrence.

The police commissioner, who conducted the governor around the station, where the attackers set a police van ablaze and destroyed a Toyota vehicle, a power generator, and other valuables in the building, said investigations were ongoing to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice, while thanking Governor Otti for his intervention and pledge to cover the medical bills of the injured officers.

The incident came five months after 17 officers were killed in Yobe State during an attack by terrorists on the Nigerian Army Special Forces School in Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of the state.

The victims were reportedly undergoing specialised operational training at the institution when terrorists launched a coordinated attack on the facility in the early hours of May 8, 2026.

Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, said that the attackers stormed the training facility from multiple directions at about 1:15 a.m., leading to intense confrontation during which the officers lost their lives.

Last month, a police officer was among the five people killed in separate attacks in Barkin Ladi and Mangu Local Government Areas of Plateau State, despite a dusk-to-dawn curfew imposed on the affected areas.

In November, 2024, a police officer was reportedly killed when gunmen attacked a patrol team along Asaga Road in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State.

The police officers were said to be on patrol when a group of young men numbering about six double-crossed them, killing one, while two injured officers managed to escape to the bush.
