Brazilian rock iconic singer and songwriter, Rita Lee, died on Monday at age 75 after a two-year battle with lung cancer.
Lee’s family revealed this in a statement shared on the singer’s Instagram page on Tuesday.
Inviting the public to her wake on Wednesday, the statement read, “We announce the death of Rita Lee at her home in Sao Paulo late last night, surrounded by all the love of her family, as she always wanted.”
Following her death, artists, politicians and celebrities flooded her page with cheers and outpouring of tributes.
The President of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva described her as “an artist ahead of her time” and “one of the greatest and most brilliant names in Brazilian music.”
Born on December 31, 1947, in Sao Paulo, to a dentist of United State descent and a Brazilian pianist with Italian ancestry.
The mother of three was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2021 and had been undergoing treatment since then.
