Birnin Gwari people lament spate of banditry

The Birnin-Gwari Emirate Progressives Union, BEPU, in Birnin Gwari local government area of Kaduna State, has expressed concern over the spate of banditry in the area.

The union called on the government and the security agencies to do the needful to save lives and property.

A statement by the group’s chairperson, Pharm. Jemila Sani, frowned at the recent tragic attacks by armed bandits at Unguwan Danko and Unguwan Kanawa of Dogondawa Ward, resulting in the death of 23 persons.

The union, however, hailed the efforts of security personnel in dealing with the situation, but urged them to step up actions.

The union urgently drew the attention of authorities to the recent surge in violent assaults orchestrated by armed bandits in the Birnin Gwari Local Government Area, saying that on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, Unguwan Danko and Unguwan Kanawa of Dogondawa Ward bore the brunt of a devastating attack, resulting in the tragic loss of 23 lives.

It added, “Merely 24 hours later, traders returning from the weekly market in Birnin Gwari Town faced ambush near Mararraban Agero, leading to the death of four vigilante members and the abduction of several others.”

According to the statement, the community of Bagoma, a suburb of Birnin Gwari “is grappling with a burgeoning humanitarian crisis as women, children, and the elderly are forced into displacement due to the persistent threat of attacks.”

He added that, “While acknowledging the gallant efforts of both the community and the government in supporting our brave men, we implore the relevant authorities to intensify and promptly execute decisive measures to quell this escalating threat.

“The people of Birnin Gwari languish in fear, underscoring the critical need for bolstered security measures to reinstate peace and stability in the region.

“We beseech the government to redouble its efforts in combating armed banditry and extend vital assistance to affected communities.”
