The Taraba State government has received the delivery of hundreds of doses of anthrax vaccines from the federal government.
Receiving the vaccines on Monday in Jalingo, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Professor Nicholas Namessan Oliver, said the vaccines would assist the state government in its efforts to combat the spread of anthrax in the state.
The vaccines were received by the Agriculture and Food Security department on behalf of the government of Taraba State.
Expressing gratitude to the federal government, the commissioner announced that the vaccines would be distributed to livestock farmers spread across the entire sixteen local government councils of the state including the two special development areas.
He also emphasized that the distribution strategy is geared at protecting the state’s livestock and to as well ensure the safety of its agricultural industry.
Underlining the government’s ongoing commitment to animal health and food security, similar anthrax vaccines, he said, had been purchased and distributed to livestock farmers in the state last year.
Speaking, the representative of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Animal Health Technical Assistant, Abubakar Sadiq, emphasized the importance of the vaccines in preventing the spread of anthrax within the state.
Sadiq, who pointed out the threats posed by the disease to livestock and, by extension, to the farmers who rely on the animals for their livelihoods, stressed the need for all hands to be on deck to prevent the outbreak of the disease in any part of the state.
