Gunmen have killed three people, including an elderly couple, in the Ikpele community of Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State. The tragic incident occurred over the weekend when armed assailants stormed the community.
A resident, who requested anonymity, stated that several people were injured during the invasion.
According to the resident, the identity of the attackers remains unknown.
“It’s becoming difficult to identify the killers. Sometimes, the attack could be propelled by the communities involved in land or chieftaincy tussles, while at other times, it could be a direct assault from armed herders,” he stated.
Godwin Edoh, the member representing Agatu State Constituency at the Benue State House of Assembly, confirmed the killings and expressed deep concern over the recurring violence in the local government area.
“A husband and wife who are advanced in age were killed inside their house during the attack,” Edoh stated.
Attempts to reach the Council Chairman, Phillip Ebenyakwu, were unsuccessful as of time of this report.
Meanwhile, Catherine Anene, the spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, said she had yet to receive a report about the incident.
