Prime Minister Mark Carney told residents of Tumbler Ridge that “the nation mourns with you” after shootings left 10 dead.
Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney has told residents of Tumbler Ridge in British Columbia that “the nation mourns with you” after nine people were killed in coordinated shootings at a secondary school and a nearby home.
At least 25 others were injured in the attacks, which unfolded at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School — about 415 miles north of Vancouver — and at a residential property close by. Police believe the two scenes are connected, although they say they cannot yet state this definitively.
According to investigators, six victims were found dead inside the school building, while a seventh died on the way to hospital. Two more people were discovered dead at a nearby residence.
Police confirmed that the suspect was found dead at the school. Officers say they know the attacker’s identity but have not released the name or gender.
Earlier during the incident, a shelter-in-place alert described the suspect as a “female in a dress with brown hair”.
Terrified students and staff described desperate efforts to stay safe as the violence unfolded. One student recounted how he and his classmates barricaded their classroom doors with tables, while a teacher described hiding for hours as the shooting continued.
Emergency services responded swiftly, securing the area and transporting the injured to hospital. Authorities say investigations are ongoing as the community grapples with one of the deadliest attacks in the province’s recent history.
