At least six people killed and several injured after petrol-laden truck lost control and rammed into tricycles in Ibadan.
At least six persons have been killed in a tragic accident involving a petrol-laden truck along the Beere/Agodi Road in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The incident also left several others injured and destroyed no fewer than six tricycles, popularly known as ‘Keke Marwa’.
Eyewitnesses said the driver of the truck lost control of the vehicle near the Beere axis, crushing two tricycles and killing two passengers instantly before heading toward the Oje market area.
Efforts to stop the truck reportedly failed as it continued its course, eventually killing four more people near the busy market.
All six victims were confirmed dead at the scene, while those injured are receiving treatment in hospitals across the city.
One of the survivors, who identified himself as Kamoru, said he narrowly escaped death.
“The truck rammed into my tricycle, but I managed to survive,” he said.
In an emotional account, a relative of one of the victims lamented the loss, noting that the deceased had only recently welcomed a child.
“My brother named his daughter just three days ago. Now he is gone. He initially survived but lost both legs before eventually dying in the hospital,” the grieving relative said.
Another eyewitness, an okada rider identified as Gafaru, suggested that the death toll could be higher than reported.
“There were bodies packed in bags that could not be immediately identified,” he said.
A senior police officer confirmed the incident, stating that two of the bodies and damaged vehicles had been taken to the Mapo Divisional Police Station.
The officer added that the case would be transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
