Russia sends second post-sanctions LNG cargo from Portovaya to China, highlighting continued energy exports despite Western restrictions.
Russian energy giant Gazprom has delivered a second liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo to China from its Portovaya plant following Western sanctions, according to shipping data released on Wednesday.
The Portovaya facility, located on the Baltic Sea, has an annual production capacity of about 1.5 million tonnes and began operations in September 2022.
Exports from the plant were disrupted after the United States imposed additional sanctions in January 2025 over the Russia-Ukraine War targeting Russia’s ability to produce and export LNG and limit its revenue streams.
Data shows that the gas carrier Valera, formerly known as Velikiy Novgorod, loaded the cargo on January 25 and delivered it to the Beihai LNG terminal in China on Wednesday.
This marks the second shipment to China since exports resumed, following a previous delivery in December after a temporary halt in operations.
Another sanctioned Russian project, Arctic LNG-2, has also been supplying LNG to the same Chinese terminal.
Before the sanctions, Portovaya typically shipped about two cargoes per month during winter. Since March 2025, however, the plant has scaled back, sending one cargo monthly to Kaliningrad alongside limited exports to China.
In its early phase, most shipments from Portovaya were directed to Turkey and Greece, before expanding to markets including China, Spain and Italy.
