Gabriel Martinelli’s stoppage time winner propelled Brazil into last 16 after Japan threatened a major World Cup upset in Houston.
Brazil needed a dramatic injury time winner from Gabriel Martinelli to edge past Japan 2-1 and book their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after a tense knockout clash in Houston.
Japan stunned the five time world champions in the 29th minute when Kaishu Sano unleashed a powerful strike from outside the area to give the Asian side a deserved lead and silence the Brazilian supporters inside the stadium.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side struggled to break down Japan’s disciplined defensive setup for much of the contest before veteran midfielder Casemiro rose highest to head home Gabriel Magalhaes’ cross 10 minutes after the restart to restore parity.
With extra time looming, Brazil continued to press for a winner and eventually found the breakthrough deep into stoppage time when substitute Martinelli kept his composure to slot home in the 96th minute and complete the comeback.
Despite dominating possession and creating numerous opportunities, Brazil were repeatedly frustrated by Japan’s organised defending and dangerous counter attacks in what proved to be one of the most closely contested matches of the Round of 32.
The victory keeps alive Brazil’s pursuit of a record extending sixth World Cup title and sends the South Americans into the Round of 16, where they will face the winners of the clash between Ivory Coast and Norway.
Japan, meanwhile, depart the tournament after another impressive World Cup campaign that pushed one of football’s giants to the brink of elimination.
