Jigawa Sponsors 65 Scholars For Postgraduate Agricultural Studies In China

Jigawa sponsors 65 postgraduate scholars to study agriculture in China, targeting stronger research, improved crop yields and higher farmers’ incomes.

The Jigawa State Government has announced plans to send 65 scholars to China for postgraduate studies in agriculture and related disciplines as part of efforts to strengthen research, innovation and agricultural productivity.

The scholars, comprising 50 master’s students and 15 doctoral candidates, were selected under the second phase of the Jigawa–China Agricultural Capacity Cooperation Programme through a bilateral scholarship framework facilitated by the Chinese government.

The programme is being implemented by the Jigawa State Agricultural Transformation Agency (JATA) in collaboration with the state’s Ministry of Higher Education.

Speaking at a farewell ceremony for the scholars, Governor Umar Namadi said the initiative reflected his administration’s commitment to human capital development and the transformation of the agricultural sector.

Namadi said sustainable agricultural development required investment in skilled manpower, scientific research, innovation and modern technology.

“We cannot transform agriculture without developing the manpower required to drive that transformation. Equally, we cannot achieve meaningful progress in agriculture without embracing science, research, innovation and technology,” the governor said.

Under the programme, the 50 master’s students will undertake three-year postgraduate programmes, while the 15 PhD candidates will pursue five-year doctoral studies.

Their areas of specialisation include soil and water conservation, desertification control, forest ecology, crop science, crop genetics and breeding, agricultural entomology, plant pathology, agricultural engineering, food science, animal and poultry genetics, aquatic science, environmental engineering, rural development, rural finance and insurance.

The governor said the initiative would complement efforts to strengthen agricultural research institutions in the state, particularly the Jigawa State Agricultural Research Institute, which his administration aims to develop into one of Nigeria’s leading state-owned agricultural research institutions.

He added that the government was sponsoring research into crops of particular importance to Jigawa’s economy, including sesame, wheat, rice and hibiscus.

According to him, the research is designed to identify practical ways of improving crop yields, increasing farmers’ earnings and strengthening their livelihoods.

“We want to understand how research can help farmers produce more, increase their earnings and improve their livelihoods. Ultimately, when we improve the yield of smallholder farmers, we also improve their incomes,” Namadi said.

The governor also disclosed that the studies of another 16 students, whose programmes were initially scheduled to take place in Russia, would be transferred to China because of the security situation in Russia.

He expressed the expectation that the students would depart soon.

Namadi said his administration’s investment in human capital extended beyond agriculture to education, information and communication technology, and other critical sectors, describing investment in people as central to sustainable development.

He urged the departing scholars to remain committed to their studies, respect the laws and culture of China, and conduct themselves responsibly as ambassadors of Jigawa State and Nigeria.

“The resources being invested in you are public funds—taxpayers’ money entrusted to us for the development of our people,” he said.

The governor charged the scholars to return home after completing their studies and apply the knowledge and skills acquired to improve agriculture and contribute to the development of Jigawa State.

“When you complete your studies and return, we expect you to put your acquired knowledge and skills to work in the service of our state and its people,” he added.
