Nigeria Declares Thursday, Friday Public Holidays For Eid-ul-Fitr

Federal Government declares March 19 and 20 public holidays as Muslims celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr after Ramadan fasting.

The Federal Government has declared Thursday, March 19 and Friday, March 20, 2026, as public holidays to mark this year’s Eid-ul-Fitr celebration.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who congratulated Muslim faithful on the successful completion of the holy month of Ramadan.

In a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani, the minister urged Muslims to uphold the values of love, generosity, peace, tolerance, and sacrifice associated with the fasting period.

He called on Nigerians to reflect these virtues beyond Ramadan in order to foster national unity and harmony.

Tunji-Ojo also encouraged citizens, irrespective of religious background, to use the festive period to pray for peace, unity, and continued progress in the country.

He further advised Nigerians to celebrate responsibly and extend kindness to the less privileged in line with the spirit of the season.

The declaration, according to the government, underscores its commitment to promoting peaceful coexistence as millions of Muslims across the country prepare to celebrate one of the most important festivals in the Islamic calendar.
