Lagos Arrests Man For Allegedly Dumping Refuse Into Drainage Channel In Ikorodu

Lagos State says a 56-year-old man is arrested for dumping refuse into a drainage channel in Ikorodu.

The Lagos State Government has arrested a 56-year-old man, identified as John Ehidreme, for dumping refuse into a drainage channel at No. 18 Oluoga, Ikorodu, as authorities intensify enforcement of environmental sanitation laws.

The arrest was announced on Tuesday by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, who said Ehidreme was apprehended earlier in the day after he was allegedly caught disposing of waste into the drainage channel. The action follows the circulation of a video showing a security guard emptying refuse from a waste bin into a drainage outside the gate of De-Young Comprehensive College in Ikorodu.

Announcing the development on X, Wahab said, “Earlier today, Mr. John Ehidreme, 56, was arrested for illegally dumping refuse into a drainage channel at No. 18 Oluoga, Ikorodu.”

The commissioner reiterated the state government’s position that indiscriminate waste disposal remains a violation of environmental regulations and warned residents against practices that obstruct drainage systems.

“The Lagos State Government reiterates that indiscriminate waste disposal is a violation of environmental laws, as it obstructs drainage channels, contributes to flooding, and poses significant public health and environmental risks,” Wahab said.

He urged residents to adopt proper waste disposal practices by using only approved waste management facilities.

“Residents are urged to dispose of waste responsibly and use only approved waste management facilities.”

The arrest is part of the Lagos State Government’s ongoing enforcement of environmental sanitation laws aimed at addressing indiscriminate waste disposal and protecting drainage infrastructure.
